Joseph Mayett worked as a living-in farm servant from the age of 12. In 1803 he enlisted in the militia and served in various parts of England and Ireland. After his discharge in 1815 he helped to found Quainton Baptist church. His memoirs are remarkable for their precise recall of detail.
